Comparing a Cyber loss and a Fire loss
A cyber breach may seem different to a fire claim, the impact and response can actually be quite similar.
For example, an electrical fault could cause a fire. The immediate reaction is that the fire needs to be extinguished and the consequence of this is that the building cannot be accessed.
With cybercrime, although the visual loss unlike a fire, if an employee receives a suspicious email and clicks on a malicious link, there is a chance that your systems could become encrypted, meaning data and information is turned into code and is then unreadable by anyone or any machine that does not know the code. The immediate reaction in this situation would be that the virus needs to be removed because consequently your IT systems cannot be accessed.
As with a fire, in the event of a cyber-attack, there will also be secondary reactions and consequences. Some examples of these include:
- Alternative means of communications and working may be required in the short term
- Time being lost due to having no systems, resulting in loss of sales and revenue
- Crisis containment and PR management to help minimise the damage to your reputation
- Fines and penalties, such as GDPR and ICO investigations
